the wire/loop/weight bias system is set at its minimum. With my 2m Black cartridge, which I have weighted at a smidge over 1.5g. This could explain my skewed canti., of course, on my Vermillion. No idea why, but have read this too many times for there not to be some truth in it. The cart's been in a drawer for a few years but when/if it goes back on, I may disable the bias device entirely, not least because Ks simply don't require much bias at all. This confirmed by pfm gurus here some months back. My Urushi was played on my Five for a few hundred hours before being transferred to 12" arms and shows a very slight cantilever offset showing that I was using too much antiskate. However for nearly a decade I've had 12" arms which require little or no antiskate, so just stick the string affair bias to virtually minimum. That was easy to calibrate with the SME Five. I once thought the blank antiskate section of my very early HFN and another set-up record was kosher so like everything, it's been a learning curve, but thank Heavens for 12" arms, which have (to me) other aesthetic, sonic and tactile benefits as well.Īs I've used upmarket m/coils since the mid eighties, tracking at about 1.7 to 2.1 g, I've used the formula on my former 9" arms of about a third of the playing weight. still looks accurately aligned (and sounding stonkingly good!).

My Proteus with nearly 800 hours, on ONLY my 12" arms the canti. is good and the sound is dynamic yet fulsome, don't worry about slightly inaccurate bias. My received wisdom/gut feeling about antiskate is that if sth is well out of kilter, you'll hear that imbalance over time. This could explain the skewed canti., of course, on my Vermillion.
